Benefits of Massage

Receiving massage has many beneficial effects on the body.  As research in the field continues, more beneficial effects are sure to be discovered.  Human physiology is very complex and thoroughly interconnected.  Massage is an ancient and wholistic practice that has been shown to have many beneficial effects on all levels of our health and well being.  When we become educated about these benefits, we will have a better understanding and greater ability to protect our greatest gift: our health.

Healing and Recovery

Massage reduces the time that it takes to recover from physical injury and helps restore damaged tissue by improving blood circulation throughout the body.  Improved blood circulation helps to remove toxins and waste materials from our normal metabolic processes, while at the same time replacing these with nutrients and oxygen needed for healthy cellular function.

Reduces Stress

Massage is a very effective stress reducer.  Simple, quality human touch creates a ripple of positive changes thoughout our entire being.  Immediatly the mind relaxes, the body moves closer to homeostasis (it's healthy balance of functioning), and our emotional fortitude and sense of well being is strengthened.

The benefits of stress reduction alone touches every aspect of our health and has a major influence on our level of enjoyment of life.  Below is an excerpt from Deepak Chopra's Quantum Healing:

"An Ohio University study of heart disease in the 1970's was conducted by feeding quite toxic, high cholesterol diets to rabbits in order to block their arteries.  Consistent results began to appear in all of the rabbit groups except for one, which strangely displayed 60 percent fewer symptoms.  Nothing in the rabbits' physiology could account for their high tolerance to the diet until it was discovered by accident that the student who was in charge of feeding these particular rabbits liked to fondle and pet them.  He would hold each rabbit lovingly for a few minutes before feeding it; astonishingly, this alone seemed to enable the animals to overcome the toxic diet.  Repeat experiments, in which one group of rabbits was treated neutrally while the others were loved, came up with similar results."

Improved Athletic Performance

Receiving massage helps to greatly reduce recovery time after strenuous workouts, enabling the athlete to train again sooner, and maintain consistent intensity levels.  This in turn helps athletes achieve higher levels of development and fitness at a faster rate.

Improved Body Awareness

Improved body awareness is important not only to athletes, but to everyone.  Improved body awareness is a key element to the development of new skills, and also greatly reduces the likelyhood of being injured in simple daily activities such as walking or bending and reaching.

Improved Posture

Certain modalities can have an enormous positive effect on our posture.  Whether it be from an injury, or improper physical growth and development, poor posture can create a lot of pain and can contribute to the development of other diseases and health complications.  These things can be avoided or overcome by improving our posture, which in many cases, requires some outside assistance.  It is important to learn healthy ways of moving and holding our body position in exercise, such as yoga.  However, our ability to exercise can be greatly inhibited by an injury or postural imbalance.  Structural bodywork can remove these barriers, allowing us to work more effectively and in the proper way.

Helps Slow the Aging Process

The more time we spend in a state of optimal health, the better we will age.  We will feel the effects of aging much less, and our physical appearance will certainly reflect this also, even into our advanced years.
